Descripción

The Plaza del Marqués is named after the title granted by Felipe V in 1707 to Carlos Miguel Ramírez de Jove, first Marquis of San Esteban del Mar de Natahoyo and Regent for Life of the Town of Gijón.

Associated with maritime activities, this area housed a salting industry for the domestic market between the 3rd and 4thcenturies.

After the construction of the port, begun in the reign of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, the Barquera Well was built here, where the election of councillors was announced between the 16th and 18th centuries.
